Christmas Tree Farm - Holiday Mini Sessions

It’s hard to believe that our Holiday & Santa Sessions are just around the corner! As the fall months fly by, November will be here before we know it. To make things easier for you, I’ve crafted this comprehensive Holiday Session Style Guide filled with tips, Santa Session Outfit Ideas, and links to take the guesswork out of dressing for your sessions. Keep reading for the ultimate guide to perfect Holiday and Santa Session photos!

Let’s Jump Into the Holiday and Santa Session Style Guide

I generally recommend choosing between two distinct looks: cozy pajamas or your Christmas best outfits. Each option offers a unique, timeless look that photographs beautifully. I suggest avoiding the “in-between” look—like a casual shirt and jeans—as it doesn’t photograph as nicely.

Pajamas

The PJ look is so easy, comfy, and undeniably cute. Whether you go for solid colors or simple patterns, you can’t go wrong with this look.

Below are some links to pajamas similar to those shown above! One of my all-time favorites is Petite Plume.

  • White Nightgown
  • Candy Cane Nightgown
  • Burt’s Bees Pajamas
  • Pottery Barn Kids Red & White Classic Pajamas
  • Pottery Barn Kids Plaid Pajamas
  • Hanna Anderson Plaid Pajamas
  • Petite Plume Red Nightgown
  • Petite Plume White Nightgown with Red Piping
  • Red & Navy PJs Petite Plume
  • Petite Plume Red Car PJs
  • Petite Plume Red Plaid PJs
  • White Plain PJs Petite Plume

Christmas Best

For a more formal look, I recommend dressing in your Christmas best outfits. Think dresses or bubbles for girls and khakis with button-down shirts for boys. Sweater overalls for baby/toddler boys are another great option and look adorable!

Here are some holiday outfit options:

  • Boys Red Plaid Shirt
  • Baby Girl Matching Plaid Set
  • Janie & Jack Red Plaid Holiday Dress
  • Boys Plaid Outfit with White Sweater
  • Floral Dress Janie & Jack
  • Janie & Jack Red Plain Satin Dress

Red & green plaid is the most timeless and popular Christmas pattern and style! Here are a few tips to keep in mind with these colors:

  • Solid Red: Be cautious when dressing multiple kids in solid red, as it can blend in with Santa’s suit. Break it up with patterns.
  • Hues of Blues & Green: Believe it or not, hues of blue pair nicely with Santa’s suit. Whether it’s soft muted blues or dark navy, this color palette looks great with the big guy in red!
  • Blue & Green Plaid: A great alternative to the red & green standard plaid.

Examples:

  • Blue & Green Plaid Boys Shirt
  • Janie & Jack Girls Solid Blue Dress
  • Janie & Jack Sparkle Blue Dress
  • Blue & Green Boys Overalls
  • Blue Train Sweater Overalls
  • Green Nutcracker Sweater Overalls
  • Velvet Green Dress
  • Blue Girls Taffeta Dress

This family below is a perfect example of coordinating siblings in blues. Only one child is in a solid pattern, while the other two have different patterns that still coordinate beautifully. All dresses were purchased from Janie & Jack.

Neutrals

Neutrals are always a safe choice! Stick with whites, creams, and pops of gold for a classic, understated look.

Neutral outfit ideas:

  • White Velvet Dress
  • Gold & White Floral Dress
  • Ivory Dress
  • Boys Green Plaid Tie
  • Boys Suspender Pants
  • Infant/Toddler Knit Set
  • Infant One-Piece Sweater

Shoes & Accessories

Don’t forget about shoes and accessories! If you opt for pajamas, I recommend bare feet. For dressier looks, nice shoes are preferred. Ensure the bottoms of shoes are clean, as they can often be visible in photos.

For girls, headbands and bows are a lovely touch. Some of my favorite places to find bows and headbands are Etsy and Little Poppy Co.
